Translation and other language services

I offer translation, interpretation, and other professional language services, including copy-editing and indexing, at reasonable rates.

Translation

I translate from English, Norwegian or Slovene and into English or Norwegian. Those are my main language pairs, but I also sometimes translate short texts into Slovene, or from some other languages into English or Norwegian.

I’m a native Norwegian speaker who spent five early years at English-language schools around the world, and have spoken Slovene actively for over 25 years.

I have translated everything from marketing campaigns to PhD theses, and from poetry to user manuals for forest winches. My specialty is the careful translation of studies in the humanities and social sciences, but I am also an experienced translator of technical documentation.

Interpretation

I offer two-way consecutive interpretation between Norwegian and Slovene. I have interpreted for supreme court judges as well as for the homeless.

Copy editing, proofreading and indexing

I have edited seven books in English (six as co-editor with others, one on my own). In five of these, I bore the main responsibility for language, style, and scholarly apparatus, including preparation of the index. Want help with yours? Tell me about it, and I’ll give you a quote.

Why choose me?

Because you care that your text is translated into correct, idiomatic Norwegian or English, by someone who either understands what you’re talking about, or who will be happy to work with you until he gets it right.

Formats

Unusual formats welcome: I do work in MS Word (.docx), if that’s what you need, but also in OpenOffice/LibreOffice (.odt) or in various mark-up languages (html, latex, org-mode, etc.). I’m prepared to work with Qt Linguist or other localization tools that can be freely installed cross-platform. I don’t currently work with other proprietary formats than MS Word/Excel or with DTP apps. I don’t currently use proprietary desktop CAT tools (translation memories), but I work with client-provided web apps (e.g. MemoQ Web) as needed.

Other languages

Depending on the contents, I can also translate from (but not into) other languages as necessary: Danish and Swedish are close to Norwegian, and one of my first gigs in the 1990s included translating Swedish news stories to English. I have done most of my research on materials in Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin or Serbian. Tell me what you need translated from these languages, and I’ll tell you if I’m confident enough. Oh, and in the unlikely event you want to pay for an Esperanto translation, I do speak it.

(While I also read French, Spanish, and Russian, and have published a translation from French into English in my own field of study, I don’t generally offer translation from these languages, much less into them.)

My business

I have been registered with the Slovenian Ministry of Culture as a self-employed writer and translator since 2008.
