Hi, I’m Christian Moe. I work as a freelance translator, and occasionally as a writer and editor. If you’ve come for my professional services, please click here.

I also teach evening courses in Norwegian at the Ljubljana Faculty of Arts.

Previously, I was a research fellow in the history of religions at the University of Oslo (2000–2007), with Islam, the Balkans and human rights as fields of interest. I still dabble in research, read widely, and have an occasional sideline in what I like to call applied religiology, working with colleagues to research and advise on how religion can support or hinder human rights. You can look up my modest list of publications and some books I have helped make. I didn’t have teaching duties, but I have lectured at a few university courses on culture, conflict, religion and human rights.

I speak Norwegian, English, Esperanto and Slovene in daily life, sometimes in the same sentence. I get by in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, am rusty in Spanish and Russian, read French, and am learning Latin.

Originally from Norway, I live in Slovenia with my family as a proud citizen of Ljubljana. In my free time I enjoy reading, jogging, doodling, coding, playing the piano really badly, and arguing with people who are wrong on the internet.

I prefer free and open-source software, live life in plain text with Emacs Org-mode under Linux, and know just enough DHTML, Perl, Elisp, and R to scratch my own itches. I have shared a couple of tools on Codeberg, and I’m in my local Emacs users group. Since May 2025 I’ve served as maintainer of Worg, the Org-mode community pages.

I favor reasonably rational policies towards a liberal, pluralist, egalitarian society within environmental bounds, and think we should fight fossil fuels and fascism.

I host a blog by a mythical owl who shares many of these interests and values. The owl hoots on Mastodon rather more frequently than on the blog.
